A pay as you go meter for gas is called a quantum meter.
It’s designed to make paying for gas easier. The meter helps you manage your money in two ways:
- To pay for gas as you use it.
- To pay towards any money you may owe from past bills.
It’s a good idea to check the display on the meter regularly. It’ll let you know when you need to top up your meter and help you to understand your usage.
Topping up your card
You can charge your card wherever you see the purple and yellow PayPoint sign or at the Post Office. To find out where your nearest PayPoint site is, take a look at the PayPoint finder. Or, to find out where your nearest Post Office is, take a look at the Post Office finder.
In both cases, please remember to keep your receipt as proof of purchase.
Transferring the credit from your card to your meter
Once you’ve credited your card, you’ll need to transfer the credit to your meter. It’s important to follow the screen prompts when transferring the credit.
When inserting your gas card, ensure the gold coloured chip on the card faces towards the meter display. To transfer your credit to the meter, press the red ‘A’ button. At this point any arrears you owe will be deducted.
The meter may ask you to check your gas appliances are switched off (if the valve has been closed) - this is a safety feature. If your appliances are off, press and hold the red ‘A’ button until the valve opens, you should be able to hear this opening and the display should change to ‘ON’. The meter will then show you how much credit you have left for gas.
Paying for arrears
If you’re in arrears, some of the credit will be taken towards paying the balance. The meter will recover the weekly amount you have agreed to pay with us. However some of the credit you have bought will always be left for your current gas supply.
Budgeting your credit
If you want to be more in control of your usage, you can choose how much gas you want to use now and how much you want to save for later. If you insert your gas card and press the black ‘B’ button, this will budget your credit in amounts of £5. Remove your card once you have done this. If you decide that you want to start using your remaining credit, insert your gas card back into the meter and press and hold the red ‘A’ button. To start budgeting your credit again, press the black ‘B’ button.
